St. Benedict Cathedral
Opus 52 - 2023
The Diocese of Evansville, Indiana has engaged Parsons to build a new, three-manual and pedal, 49 voice, 57 rank pipe organ to be installed at St. Benedict Cathedral. The new Gallery organ incorporates electric slider and electro-pneumatic actions and will be situated across the back wall of the expanded musicians’ gallery. New casework will be designed to conform to the Cathedral’s Lombard-basilica style architecture and will incorporate images of the Cross of St. Benedict. Portions of the organ will flank the centrally located stained-glass windows. A Nave organ will be installed in a chamber located above the west side of the sanctuary platform, to accompany the antiphonal cantor and modest congregational accompaniment for smaller services focused in the front of the church. Two identical, moveable consoles are planned to control the instrument from either location. The Cathedral’s rectangular shape combined with its plaster walls, sixty-five-foot-high ceilings, (rebuilt and hardened during the renovation), and new porcelain and hardwood floors result in an acoustical environment that is extremely favorable for all aspects of music.
