Project 58

Parsons Project 58, a four-manual and pedal, sixty-nine rank organ built for First Presbyterian Church, Columbia, South Carolina, is scheduled for delivery in January of 2027.  The organ consists of an unenclosed Great division, enclosed Swell, Choir & Solo divisions and a sizeable Pedal division. The organ’s tonal design, which places greater emphasis on fundamental tone, is the result of a collaborative process between Duane Prill, Parsons Tonal Director and the church’s full-time musicians (Daniel Cole, Director of Music Ministry and Thomas Russell, Organist and Assistant Director of Music). Throughout this process, great care was taken to ensure that the organ performs in optimal fashion in the newly reengineered sanctuary acoustic. The noteworthy Solo division features an 8’ Orchestral Flute, 8’ Gamba and Gamba Celeste, 4’ Claribel Flute, 8’ French Horn, 8’ English Horn and an 8’ Tuba. The Trompette en Chamade will be located in the rear gallery.

Organized in 1795, First Presbyterian Church, Columbia has a long history of supporting excellence in music. While the major function of the new organ is to lead the congregation and accompany the church’s many choirs and ensembles, as before, the organ will be widely used for programming that ministers to the community at large.
